La description

Birjand, the capital of South Khorasan Province, is a city with deep cultural roots and a long-standing tradition of Persian rug weaving. For over two centuries, it has been known for producing intricate and refined carpets that showcase both local artistry and broader Persian influences.

Birjand rugs are instantly recognizable for their elegant designs and fine craftsmanship. Many feature a central medallion surrounded by detailed patterns like the Herati (Mahi) motif, Boteh designs, and Kheshti structures—each adding character and complexity to the rug’s overall aesthetic. The color palette tends to favor deep blues, rich reds, cream, and beige, creating a striking yet timeless look.
Beyond their beauty, these rugs are built to last. With a dense knotting structure that ranges from 200,000 to 350,000 knots per square meter, they have a soft yet durable texture that holds up well over time. Skilled weavers use high-quality wool for the pile and cotton for the foundation, ensuring strength and longevity. The asymmetric knotting technique further enhances the precision and softness of the weave.

Historically, Birjand’s rug-making tradition flourished thanks to Tabriz merchants who set up workshops in the city and introduced new techniques. Over time, the craftsmanship evolved, blending traditional Persian styles with the unique characteristics of the region. Today, Birjand rugs remain highly valued for their artistic beauty and cultural significance
